Overview of Kyoto City Music Art and Cultural Promoting Foundation

The Foundation was authorized to transfer to a public interest incorporated foundation on April 1, 2012 with a two-fold mission. Firstly, based on the Declaration of Kyoto City as the World Cultural Freedom City, our goal is to contribute that Kyoto creates superior culture and being a key location of interaction on world culture, by promoting the area’s performing arts such as music, theatricals, and dancing, and sending these both in Japan and overseas. Secondly, we contribute to foster a society where city citizens could have a cultural life with livable.

The Foundation manages five Regional Cultural Halls as well as Kyoto Concert Hall and ROHM Theatre Kyoto. Our role in this capacity is to provide opportunities for city citizens to be inspired by music and the arts, and being a stronghold in the arts and cultural activities of Kyoto.

Our goal for the management of the City of Kyoto Symphony Orchestra is, through the presence of the Orchestra in Kyoto, to make the current environment even more conducive to gathering and growing excellent musicians and young artists to the city of Kyoto. By giving unification to facility management operations and Orchestra activities, we contribute a further promote and develop music and the arts in Kyoto.

Objective of the Foundation

Overview of Operations

  • 1. Project contributes to promote arts and entertainment as well as to perpetuate/develop traditional performing arts.
  • 2. Project contributes to inform the culture and arts of Kyoto both in Japan and overseas and to encourage interaction on the subject.
  • 3. Project contributes to promote and inform the arts through Kyoto Symphony Orchestra.
  • 4. Project contributes to revitalize communities and development via culture and the arts.
  • 5. Managing facilities with a view to achieving ceaseless creative activity, as a stronghold in the arts and cultural activities.
  • 6. Other projects necessary to achieve Foundation goals.

Date of Establishment

March 31, 1993 (The Foundation was first established as the former Kyoto City Music and Arts Promotion Foundation)

    Kyoto Kaikan Hall Service Center established

  • Mar. 1970

    Re-organized as a foundation, name changed to Kyoto Kaikan Hall Service Center Foundation

  • Mar. 1993

    Kyoto City Music and Arts Promotion Foundation established

  • June 1993

    Kyoto Kaikan Hall Service Center Foundation changed its name to Kyoto City Cultural Hall Management Center

  • Oct. 2000

    Kyoto City Music and Arts Promotion Foundation merges with Kyoto City Cultural Hall Management Center Foundation to create Kyoto City Music Art and Cultural Promoting Foundation

  • Apr. 2006

    Undertakes operations and management of Kyoto Concert Hall, Kyoto Kaikan Hall, Avanti Kyoto Hall, and the five Regional Cultural Halls

  • Apr. 2009

    Kyoto Symphony Orchestra operations transferred to the Foundation
